Celebrate NAIDOC Week!​ 

21-24 July 2025

Students have the option to participate in NAIDOC week activities at Bundaberg North SHS as​ we honour and celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Below is a range of activities planned for the week. Let’s come together to learn, reflect, and celebrate.

Please note that participation in these activities is optional. Some events may include tastings of traditional foods such as damper, native ingredients, and bush tucker. If your child has any food allergies or dietary restrictions, please ensure they are aware and exercise caution during these sessions. Ingredients/Foods listed below*


MONDAY 21st JULY – Firepit & Damper Experience

Time: Second Lunch (1:10pm-1:50pm)

Location: Back of the Oval

Join us for a cultural experience as we yarn about the significance of damper in First Nations culture. Learn how it connects us to Country, community, and tradition. Grab a warm piece of damper with your choice of toppings and enjoy tastings of crocodile and kangaroo bites.

TUESDAY 22nd JULY – Whole School Parade

Time: 9:30am – 10:10am

Location: Hall

Join us for our Whole School NAIDOC Parade, a time to honour, reflect, and celebrate culture and community.

Event Program

  • Smoking Ceremony – Elijah & Cadell Blackman

  • Acknowledgement to Country & Speech – Aunty Muriel Brown

  • NAIDOC Speeches – Peta Steel & Cameron Raines

  • Dance & Didgeridoo Performance – Elijah & Cadell Blackman

Morning Tea to Follow provided by Gidji Cafe for LCEB Committee, Year 11 & 12 First Nation Students and Staff

WEDNESDAY 23rd JULY – Bush Tucker Garden Experience

Time: Second Lunch (1:10pm – 1:50pm)

Location: Bush Tucker Garden Area

Come along for a hands-on cultural learning experience in our beautiful Bush Tucker Garden lead by Dean Lillyman.

What’s On:

  • Explore bush medicine, native plants, and their traditional uses

  • Taste Pig Face and enjoy Lemon Myrtle brownies

  • Discover the health benefits and stories behind Gumbi Gumbi

  • Engage in relaxed, meaningful learning with community connections

THURSDAY 24th JULY – Cultural Workshops

Time: 1:00pm – 1:50pm

Location: School Hall

Students will rotate through two 25-minute workshops, gaining insight into cultural practices and traditions in an engaging and hands-on way.

Workshop Sessions:

  • Dance & Didgeridoo Workshops – Elijah & Cadell Blackman

  • Traditional Weaving Workshop – Miss Karen Pearce



* Below is a list of ingredients/Food students may be exposed to during NAIDOC Week activities. This list is not exhaustive, but can be used to help inform families, especially those with dietary considerations or allergies:

Native Bush Ingredients

  • Gumbi Gumbi – traditional bush medicine

  • Lemon Myrtle – aromatic native herb

  • Pig Face – edible native succulent

Meats

  • Kangaroo

  • Crocodile

Damper & Toppings

  • Wheaten Flour

  • Butter

  • Egg

  • Milk

  • Golden Syrup

  • Strawberry Jam

  • Plum Jam​
